My intention for this Votive was to explore the transformative nature of loss through the material properties of wax. The piece reflects on the Portuguese custom of "promessas de cera," in which Catholic pilgrims burn anatomical candles to seek healing. By making plaster molds of my own body to cast candles in, the piece reframes grief as a ritual for self-transformation. The sense of loss is turned inwards rather than outwards, choosing to memorialize myself rather than those lost.
